Teachers talk less; pupils talk more

Session overview

Research suggests that teachers tend to talk more than pupils in the classroom, reducing opportunities for pupils to explore new learning, to test out their understanding on others, to develop their oracy skills, and for teachers to find out the impact of their teaching. This session will consider ways to reduce teacher talk and to increase productive pupil talk. 

Session aims

Delegates will consider:

• What research says about the impact of reducing teacher talk and increasing learner talk
• When teacher talk is most effective in a lesson and when pupil talk or more independent activity is more useful
• Ways to support teachers to reduce their talk, while effectively imparting knowledge and leading learning 
• Ways to develop dialogic teaching and support pupils to develop their speaking and listening skills and ability to think more deeply.
