Teaching and Learning WalkThrus

Programme overview

This cross-phase programme focuses on developing teacher excellence through the use of WalkThrus, an evidence-informed framework for teaching development which contains the best of the profession’s practices. The programme is delivered through 5 sessions and focuses on strategies that offer solutions to tackling students’ learning problems rather than teacher performance. Each session follows a similar format and will be facilitated by colleagues from across the Teaching School Hub region. 

Each session is focused on one area of practice and the strategies that have the highest leverage in the classroom. These strategies will provide a reference point for reflection and support discussion about the ‘best bets’ for teaching in participants’ particular contexts, followed by time to implement and embed these in their practice. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to hear from other professionals from across the region about how they’ve used WalkThrus to transform practice in their classroom.

Programme aims

• Introduce colleagues to WalkThrus: an evidence-informed framework for teaching development that provides the what, why and how of great teaching, whatever their career stage
• Create opportunities for colleagues to engage in rich conversations and reflection about how to improve practice
• Support colleagues to implement and embed the strategies that underpin great teaching and learning
• Empower colleagues to take ownership of their own professional development
• Create opportunities for collaboration and professional networking between colleagues 

Suitable for

Primary and secondary teachers in their 3rd/4th year of teaching who are either new to WalkThrus or have experience of using them in their practice.

Alternatively, this programme would also be suitable for teachers looking to get the best out of their students and work towards mastery.

Sessions will include

• Bringing a diverse curriculum intent into the classroom and supporting students to think hard.
• Pedagogical approaches to supporting students with SEND and how to close gaps in literacy
• Time-efficient strategies for feedback which will help to move students forward
• Develop retrieval practices that support students’ long term retention of knowledge 
• How to create the conditions for strongly independent learning

Cost

£100 per person (please choose to pay by invoice to avoid additional fees)

This programme is supported by the York Schools and Academies Board. If you are a York-based school and did not use your two free WalkThru places during 2021/22, you may do so for the 2022/23 programme.
