Session overview

A marker of higher level writing, and an expectation for pupils by the end of primary school, is the ability to adapt their writing effectively for different audiences and purposes, including a conscious selection of the register they use. ‘Register’ refers to the degree of formality of language, the choice of vocabulary, grammatical structures and punctuation. This short, focused, online session will look at the key markers of formal and informal registers and give guidance on how to introduce and secure these in children’s writing.

Session aims

  1. Understand the key features of formal and informal registers;
  2. Gain a range of approaches to teaching children these features and in judging when and how to use them to improve the effectiveness of their writing for different purposes and audiences.
