Information for Applicants
If you’ve just graduated, you’re studying for a degree or you want to change your career, there are a number of teacher training routes available to you across our region. All primary and secondary postgraduate teacher training courses include time spent in school placements and some theoretical learning.
In our region (York, Ryedale and the North Yorkshire Coast), we have three accredited training providers; Scarborough Teaching Alliance Coast and Vale Teacher Training, University of York and York St John University. The providers offer their own courses and some also work with lead partners to provide school-centred routes.

Bursaries
The Department for Education offers training bursaries in certain circumstances. In 2026-27, scholarships and bursaries are available for the following subjects:

Subject Knowledge Enhancements
Don’t hold back from applying for teacher training in chemistry, computing, maths, languages and physics because of a lack of confidence in the level of your subject knowledge. You may still be able to train to teach these subjects (and be eligible for the bursaries they attract) by building up or refreshing your existing knowledge with a free Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) programme.
