Mentoring across our region

Being an ITE mentor is a valuable and rewarding role. From improving your own pedagogical knowledge and practice to developing leadership skills, mentoring is a great next step for your career. Read more about being an ITE mentor from some of the mentors across our region.

Rebecca is an experienced mentor for the University of York. She has been a subject mentor since 2014 and a professional tutor since 2021. Rebecca and her school mentoring team find the role to be hugely rewarding and recognise benefits such as various professional development opportunities and the ability to reflect upon one’s own practice. Rebecca’s dedication to leading mentoring has been recognised through York St John University’s Mentor Leadership Programme. Rebecca elected to complete a National Professional Qualification in Leading Teacher Development which she feels has given her insight into how she can support teachers’ understanding of the theory of learning.

Rebecca Harwood, Selby High School

Harry is in his second year of mentoring with Scarborough Teaching Alliance – Coast and Vale. Harry’s own journey into teaching began working as a cricket coach when he realised that he could empower children to believe in their own potential. He now seeks to empower trainee teachers by setting high expectations and providing high levels of support. Harry feels that mentoring has enhanced his own teaching career through access to professional development opportunities as well as gaining experience within other phases of school.

Harry Burton, St Martin’s CE Primary School, Scarborough

Mike is an experienced teacher and school leader who mentors trainees with Scarborough Teaching Alliance – Coast and Vale. Mike is dedicated to building a stronger education system for the future and knows that at the core of this is developing great teachers through mentoring. Mike has found that mentoring has supported him in developing his own skill set and professional qualities. He also benefits from the innovative approaches that trainee teachers bring as well as their up to date research and pedagogical knowledge.

Mike Taylor, Cayton CE Primary School, Scarborough

Catherine is a highly experienced mentor with York St. John University. With a background as a lead English teacher and literacy consultant, she feels strongly about the power of mentoring and believes in ‘paying it forward’ to the teaching profession. Taking inspiration from mentors she worked with early in her own career, Catherine tries to draw out the strengths of each individual mentee to make them the best they can be. She feels that mentoring has helped develop her own skills of listening, responding and managing challenging conversations.
